France Establishes First EU Consulate in Greenland
The Foreign Ministry confirmed in an official statement that Poirier has arrived in Greenland and commenced his duties as French consul general in Nuuk.
"In accordance with the announcements made by President Macron in Greenland in June 2025, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is increasing its consular network and becomes the first European Union country to set up a consulate general in Greenland," the statement declared.
Poirier's mandate encompasses active engagement with Greenland's French expatriate population while spearheading efforts to strengthen ongoing cultural, scientific, and economic partnership initiatives with Greenland, according to the ministry's announcement.
The ministry emphasized robust friendship bonds and significant collaborative ventures already connecting France, Denmark, and Greenland, underlining that France reaffirms its dedication to honoring Denmark's territorial sovereignty.
Macron's declaration materialized against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's revived pursuit of American dominion over Greenland, invoking national security rationales linked to Russia and China. He additionally issued sanction warnings against European nations resisting the attempted acquisition of the Danish territory.
He retracted those threats following discussions with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, announcing a framework for an agreement encompassing Greenland and the wider Arctic zone had been formulated.
Negotiations among the US, Denmark, and Greenland commenced last week to defuse the crisis.
