Maersk, Suez Canal Authority Forge Strategic Partnership

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and Danish logistics and shipping giant Maersk formalized a strategic partnership agreement, marking the potential return of Maersk to the Red Sea route via the Suez Canal after a suspension of almost two years.

The agreement was signed in the presence of SCA Chairman and Managing Director Osama Rabie and Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc.

Rabie told a news agency that this agreement opens up fresh opportunities for collaboration in various maritime and logistical sectors, and he expressed optimism about the return of traffic to normal levels in the region soon, as security conditions improve.

Rabie also revealed that the SCA is offering a 15% discount on all container ships with a net tonnage greater than 15,000 tons that pass through the Suez Canal.

He noted that this incentive will be available until March of the following year.

According to an official statement from the SCA on Tuesday, vessels associated with Maersk will begin partial transits through the Suez Canal in early December, with plans for a full return soon afterward.

However, Maersk provided further clarification on Wednesday through a statement on its website, stating that the company is still "conducting detailed security assessments" and that there is "no specific timing" for its full return to the route.

The company reiterated that "the safety of crew, vessels and cargo remains our top priority."
